Making Places, Shaping Destinations

Introduction to the assignment in Silva Jardim, occupation area 938,336 km².
The municipality has around 25.000 inhabitants and part of Silva Jardim’s territory is protected by ‘Poço das Antas Biological Reserve’ and União” reserve both reserves for the preservation of the Atlantic Forest and the Golden Lion Tamarin. Part of this territory is also protected by private owners and several of them have transformed their private land in “Private Reserve of the Natural Heritage”. Golden lion tamarins are beautiful tiny monkeys that were on the verge of extinction in the native habitat. Today there are some threats to the species survival and the forest which is unplanned urban expansion, unplanned agriculture and cattle (Land System Change). and this is a topic that deserves more investigation and action.

The region has great-unexplored natural tourism potential, including Juturnaíba Lagoon and several waterfalls and rivers, that could be used for ecotourism and adventure tourism. Social actors in Silva Jardim, are developing the “Silva Jardim 2030 initiative”, a sustainable movement aiming at developing a diversity of projects that are locally and financially possible in the region, supporting the local development.

Here is a definition of the movement Silva Jardim together with their vision and mission, principles and stakeholders: “this is an autonomous movement without a party in which we unite professionals from different areas and fields to think and propose solutions that aims to assess, monitoring and share the evolution of silva jardim quality of life as well as the region. there are 4 integrated and interdependent dimensions: economic ecology, social/collective ecology, environmental ecoloty and personal/individual ecology.”

Vision of the movement:

We are agents of the sustainable development process of the municipality and we are promoters of the empowerment of citizenship competences as well as the local and cultural identity. we want to create a hight level quality of life creating education and innovative environment. vision of the future:We want to be recognized and respected as a green territory, promoting education and high quality of life and we want to be the reference of rural/eco-tourism; educational tourism and organic agriculture. Principles of the movement:

• Transformation, innovation and sustainability
• Awareness of the region and its needs

Knowledge, research and technology: Some innitiatives already taking place:

• Conservation and reflorestation of the atlantica forest and the golden lion tamarin

• Esporte e lazer – Clube Imbaú de futbol
• Leisure and sports
• Local plan of the library
• Advises – technical, academic and financial strategies (university UniRio).

Steps to go:

• Identify an strategy of the territorial development and implementation of necessary conditions for the governance of
  Agenda 21 Silva Jardim
• Mobilize the civil society and create social dialogue for a collective action
• Collective construction of a prospective view of the future and the strenghtening of the initiatives
• Qualification on the territorial governance and management of the region in a collaborative and democratic manner.

In what way could municipality and the NGOs contributes is stimulation and facilitating culture activities that
empower the citizens and attract others to come.
What changes should be made in the Urban fabric or Public realm or new possibilities to emerge to host these activities in an effective and sustainable way?
How art can be an instrument, a tool to create visibility to Silva Jardim and to help to make it a sustainable place?
